Mom And The Dalai Lama

Cheryl Cope Posted on April 6, 2011 by Cheryl CopeMarch 6, 2021

I picked up a new book the other day by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, entitled: How To Be Compassionate: A Handbook For Creating Inner Peace and a Happier World. My purpose in buying the book was to find the common ground between Buddhism and Christianity, and was inspired by my knowledge that Thomas Merton (a Trappist Monk and writer) had meetings with the Dalai Lama. In general terms, according to the Dalai Lama, compassion, even with a little self-interest thrown in, can change us, and in doing so, can change the world.

Comfort in the Ordinary

Cheryl Cope Posted on March 30, 2011 by Cheryl CopeMarch 6, 2021

We often take for granted the ordinary things of every day life, but these are often what we long for in times following tragedy. When we are beset by tragedy we can find comfort in doing the little things. These include taking care of our families and ourselves; making and meeting schedules; cooking a meal; washing dishes; filling out forms; making phone calls to follow up on business items – you get the idea. Cheryl Cope Posted on March 23, 2011 by Cheryl CopeMarch 6, 2021

We watch in awe the people of Japan these past weeks. It appears that the faith or philosophy practiced in Japan is less ego-centric, and more other-centered than we are used to. WE are not the center of the world. We are only a part of a great whole. Perhaps this is why we see no looting, and while waiting for their allotment of water, food or other distributions from human service agencies – the Japanese actually stay within serpentine-like chalk-drawn lines on the pavement. Nothing is forcing them to be civil. They just are – even amidst the heartache they are feeling.

The Gift of Discipline

Cheryl Cope Posted on March 16, 2011 by Cheryl CopeMarch 6, 2021

It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through. Zig Zigler

Wow! Thank you, Zig! As I thought about what I’ve committed to lately, for improving my quality of life, I began to think about that word – discipline. What does it take to be a disciplined person? Well, okay, what does it take for ME to be a disciplined person?

Discovering Self Interest

Cheryl Cope Posted on March 9, 2011 by Cheryl CopeMarch 6, 2021

What I am about to say may not sit well with those of you who struggle with “healthy eating.” I know because I struggled with it – still do. I’m a lover of all things bread, sweet, creamy or chocolate-y. And, in my life, I’ve had to lose weight a few times, such as following child-birth or following stressful times in my life, where I used food as a friend, and invited it over often.
